What is Ms Steel?

Mild steel is a carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. It is widely used in the automobile and decoration sectors because of its low strength, low hardness and softness. Mild steel is not an alloy steel and therefore does not contain large amounts of other elements besides iron. It is nearly impossible to harden and strengthen through heating and quenching. Mild steel has very little carbon and other alloying elements to block dislocations in its crystal structure and it is less tensile strength than high carbon and alloy steels. Mild steel also has a high amount iron and ferrite, making it magnetic.

Properties of mild steel:

Mild steel is not an alloy steel, and therefore does not contain large amounts of other elements besides iron. This makes it different from other steel types in a few ways:

• More ductile, machinable and weldable than high carbon and other steels
• Nearly impossible to harden and strengthen during heating and quenching
• Very little carbon and other alloying elements to block dislocations in crystal structure, which means less tensile strength
• High amounts of iron and ferrite, making it magnetic
• Subject to oxidation if not properly coated
• Relatively affordable compared to other steels
